The bacterial profile in prawn pond rearing water in NFRDI was conducted for eight weeks. One-liter composite samples were collected aseptically from the different areas of the pond using the Z pattern. Water samples were serially diluted and plated into nutrient agar for heterotrophs, thiosulfate bile sucrose agar (TCBS) for Vibrio, cetrimide agar for Pseudomonas sp and triple sugar iron agar (TSI) for sulfur reducers, nitrate broth for nitrate and nitrite reducers and lactose broth for lactose fermentors. The dominant isolates of each functional group were subjected to some biochemical tests for characterization and possible classification and identification.
The results showed five functional groups in prawn rearing water: heterotrophic bacteria,Vibrio, nitrate reducers, nitrite reducers and lactose fermenters. Nine isolates composed the total heterotrophs, thirteen Vibrio isolates, four nitrate reducers, seven nitrite reducers and one lactose fermenter. Pseudomonas bacteria were not detected in the water for the whole sampling period.
Nitrate and nitrite reducers were the most dominant functional groups followed by heterotrophs, Vibrio group and the lactose fermenters.
