ABSTRACT
The jumbo tiger prawn, Penaeus monodon Fabricius is a major dollar earner of the country and its success is anchored on steady supply of good quality fry. The lack of fry quality standard has lead to manipulated market, excessive profiteering, and heavy losses in hatcheries and poor pond production.
This study focused on the development of a Fry Quality Software which will enhance the present fry quality standard test developed by UNIAQUA LAB by interfacing it with an image using Microsoft Visual Basic (VB).
VB is a third-generation event-driven programming language and integrated development environment from the Microsoft for its Component Object Model programming. Its graphical development features and BASIC tradition are very relevant to the program dealing with the Rapid Appication Development (RAD) of Graphical User Interface (GUI) applications, access to database using Data Access Objects and is very challenging in dealing with bugs and errors.
The program analyzes the data generated by UNIAQUA Laboratory for three years monitoring of eleven hatcheries in Northern Mindanao. The criteria include physical and morphological characteristics both macroscopical and microscopical.
The program has successfully elucidated the fry quality criteria developed by UNIAQUA Lab with graphical interfacing with a mean standard error of only 1.33. The program is user-friendly and easy to learn and is expected to be instrumental in addressing excessive profiteering and manipulated issues.
